Let’s be honest. Sword Art Online is one of those anime series that holds a special place in our hearts. If only because of the fact that they were one of the first, and the best, to introduce the concept of completely submerging the consciousness into a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) and providing us with an immersive experience that was out of this world. Literally.
So when I heard that SAO was coming to the big screen, you can imagine my excitement! Ordinal Scale was initially released in Japan on February 18, 2017 in Japan and was later released in the United States on March 9, 2017. Prior to watching Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, if you haven’t watched the seasons 1 and 2 of the Sword Art Online anime series, I strongly recommend doing that first.
Now let’s get into it. I’ll try not to give too much away. Unlike the SAO anime series where most of the story takes place in the virtual space, SAO: Ordinal Scale actually takes place in the real world which I thought was really cool. Instead of using NerveGear to full-dive into a virtual world, our heroes use an augmented reality device called Augma.
Just about everything about this movie was completely on point. This holds true for the beautiful animation, well-written story, epic fight-choreography, unique character design, the moving soundtrack and music, and overall amazing film quality. And of course, let’s not forget about those beautiful little moments that we so loved seeing in the Sword Art Online anime series.
In summary, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale masterfully encapsulates what we came here to see: the essence of Sword Art Online consolidated into one brilliant masterpiece. I highly recommend this to not just fans of Sword Art Online, but to all anime fans. So go see it now and enjoy!
